Freedom

I love Passover. I love the seder, reading the hagaddah, being with family and friends, etc. Along with Tu B’Shvat it’s my favorite Jewish holiday. One thing I’ll never understand about it though is the recitation of “L’Shana Ha’ba B’Yerushalayim/Next year in Jerusalem”. Most people who say it, don’t seem to actually mean it or really care.

This year for the second seder we went to a family friend’s. It’s been a tradition for many years. During the seder someone mentioned something about the redemption of Bnei Yisrael from Egypt and redemption today and life in America. I happened to be on a certain page of my hagaddah as he was talking and noticed in the commentary something about redemption being complete with Bnei Yisrael entering Israel.

We may feel comfortable and free from oppression in America or anywhere else we are, but we’re still all slaves to something and not truly free. Otherwise, despite the good life and comfort, we’d all be living in Israel and feel/be free just in that. As for us who are living in Israel, it seems we too are slaves to certain things.
