10.5 years: A reflection

It’s now been over 5 years since Gilad Shalit, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser were abducted (and in the latter two cases, murdered) by Hamas. Over the past few years, there have been comparisons and reflections on how we are living our lives and what’s happened, and how Gilad hasn’t been able to go on with his life and experience these.

Last night during a very late night dinner with a friend I asked her what she was up to that crazy summer five years ago when the three soldiers were captured. She told me how she had recently come back from her year in Israel and what she was doing that summer and then reflected on the major milestones she’s reached since then. I reflected how I was here that summer. I had arrived a day or two after it happened.

Sometimes I’m a little late with hearing certain news. This morning I noticed that some friends on Facebook had been added to a certain group. “That’s a very interesting name for a group”, I thought to myself. I then proceeded to click on the link and then on one of my friend’s on the page. His page had a link to an article that I apparently completely missed yesterday. I won’t go into details of it, but it made me reflect again on the things that have happened in my life in the past five years.

That summer blazed the path into the Internet, online marketing, business, and journalism that I have taken. In that time, I have graduated from college, entered the work force, watched my sister get married, met her daughter (my niece), made aliyah, lived in Jerusalem, lived in Tel Aviv, traveled to and from the States for various occasions, visited Montreal, Chicago, and Austin for the first time, watched my friends get married, started this blog and list, and become a journalist, among other things.

I titled this entry the way I did because it’s been the same five year period but can be looked at (by me) in different ways that I felt was more like different time periods (five years since my internship, five years since Gilad was captured, (almost) six months since I started the 28 challenge). It’s crazy that it’s been five years and crazier to think what it’s been like for Gilad.
